Fifth Wall Ceilings

Fifth Wall Ceilings

The 5th Wall™ line of custom wood ceiling products is a complete, engineered ceiling system, manufactured by 5th Wall Designs, LLC. The system is unique in its simplicity of implementation. The design consists of only four wood components and three metal fasteners. The metal fasteners are used to secure the installation of the product and are located, out of sight, behind the finished ceiling surface.

The following describes each of these components:

Wood Components - Mission Style Dimensions
  • Perimeter Member (pine) - 1-1/2" W x 5/8" D x 8' L
  • Long Grid (solid wood) - 1-1/2" W x 3/4" D x 12' L
  • Short Grid (solid wood) - 1-1/2" W x 3/4" D x 22-1/2" L
  • Ceiling Panel (veneer on MDF) - 23-3/8" W x 23-3/8" L x 1/2" D
Metal Fasteners
  • Grid Connector
  • Eye Screw - #10 screw eye
  • Suspension Wire - 16 ga./18 ga.

The perimeter member is manufactured from pine and is milled to 5/8" thickness. It is used to facilitate fast and level installation of the grids. The perimeter member is nailed to the wood studs in the wall or screwed, if the studs are steel. A pole mounted laser level is very useful for leveling these members around the perimeter of the room. The system is based on a 24" by 24" grid layout pattern. The long grids are used to span the room dimension that is less than 12'. In the event the span is greater than 12', the long grids can be extended beyond 12' in 2' increments and are specified so, at the time of order. The short grids are inserted between the long grids, at a 90° angle and at 2' intervals. The metal grid connector secures the long and short grid at the intersection of the two grids.

The customer may choose from a large selection of wood species for their ceiling. Some of the traditional selections are hard or soft maple, cherry, oak, walnut and ash; however, specialty woods, such as African padauk, Brazilian cherry, anegre and many others are possible. The grids are solid wood and the panels are wood veneer over 1/2" MDF. MDF was selected for its superior stability characteristics over plywood. To prevent moisture intrusion, all surfaces of the grids and panels receive a sealing varnish coat and all exposed finished surfaces receive a second top finishing coat. In addition to the choice of woods, the customer may select from various stain colors, to match or complement the room’s surroundings. 5th Wall™ ceilings are handcrafted and produce a rich look that is truly exceptional.

5th Wall™ ceilings are supplied to the dealer/installer completely finished and ready for installation. No additional labor is required, other than installing the ceiling system, one component at a time. The installation of the ceiling requires no special tools. The required basic tools are:

  • A pole mounted laser level
  • Miter saw
  • Portable table saw
  • Finishing nail gun

The unique system design, precision handcrafting process and installation techniques permit fast installation, resulting in a finished, affordable ceiling that has that “master craftsman” look. 5th Wall™ ceilings provide the dealer/installer with the ability to offer a unique product that will differentiate them from their competition, and, because the dealer is buying at a wholesale price, a substantial profit margin.
